Would it be possible to modify a vintage car….?

Okay, so, my dream car is the old round-top convertible Volkswagen super beetle [1979, I believe] but I would never, ever drive anything that pollutes. So would it be possible to make the aforementioned car energy efficient by means of solar or electric power without altering the exterior at all? I mean, like, COMPLETELY zero-energy, replace entire motor/engine system thing? But retaining the original look?

First, you need to realize that there is absolutely no such thing as a non polluting car. The tires put rubber on the road that washes into the dirt and water, batteries are bad to make and some are hard to dispose of etc. That being said I believe the best balance between the 2 would be to run a propane conversion to it. Natural gas burns about 70% cleaner. You CAN get an electric motor setup, I’ve seen them. But you need to remember that all those batteries will add weight, and will eventually pollute. I admire you’re zest for being kind to the environment. My beetle runs on propane right now. However it’s not possible to have a completely pollution free car… yet.
