Why is it not acceptable to play Gary Glitter songs, but…?

Routh now uses the name Colin Gibb, and lives with his wife Susie in Tenerife. He regularly performs the “Black Lace Show” around the island.

Well, it happened many years ago (at least 20 years ago from what I can gather), it probably happened under the tabloid radar as they weren’t so paedo-mad then as they are now, and I can find nothing to say he was actually convicted for it. He basically didn’t achieve sufficient notoriety, through publicity, for his records to be boycotted en masse.

A stranger case is that of Bill Wyman, whose affair with the underage Mandy Smith (who he subsequently married) was very widely publicised, yet he seems to have got away scot free and without any stain on his record. He still enjoys rock legend status and gets invited onto GMTV for cosy little chats on the sofa. In any potted biography of him, his underage shenanigans seem to be written off as a kind of mid life crisis.

P.J.Proby is another sixties singer who OPENLY bragged about having had sex with underage girls. He said something like “Girls are ready for sex as soon as they start their period” – I don’t have the exact quote. But his records still get played on sixties oldie stations and his only real claim to notoriety is splitting his trousers on stage. When the underage sex is mentioned in articles about him at all, it’s classed as just another “demon” for him, like his alcoholism.

Glitter on the other hand seems to have transformed by the media into some sort of demon himself, a kind of poster boy for paedos everywhere. Yes, he’s a pervert who’s done some wrong and perverted things but beyond that, it’s all BS. Bash him for what he’s done by all means but don’t let it destroy his musical legacy.
