What is the correct/best placement for cloth napkins on the dinner table?

These are square napkins folded into a triangle.

On the left-hand side, under the fork(s) is the normal location. However, if you to place it on the plate itself, if it is held within a napkin ring, you may. Sometimes it is also found “above” the place setting, again, if it has a napkin ring on it. But if it is simply folded into the triangle, the left side is proper.
