How To Collage And Embellish With Fabric Embroidery

So what is fabric collage? Fabric collage is collecting inspiring pieces of fabrics or papers and joining them together in layers with an assortment of seaming, and needlework techniques. Choose from traditional stitching, appliqué or over laying raw seams for a modern look or felting. This creates a base fabric for you to decorate. Create pleasing patterns, or tell a story with your work. Crazy patchwork is a form of collage with its roots deep in history. Many artists create books, wall panels, purses, artist trading cards and more.
Collage preparation – Fabrics can be prepared for collage by tearing or cutting strips, fraying or burning edges and holes, scrunching or pleating fabrics for texture. Sometimes pieces of lace from a family member are added to the collage as memorabilia. Fabrics can be painted or stamped with different mediums. I love to lay down some brilliant fabrics which, on their own, alarm me, but when I layer up lace and sheer fabrics over the top it leaves beautiful light from the back of the collage. Embroidering & quilting with hand-dyed silk threads and ribbons is ideal for highlighting areas, making lines or borders and fastening laces, adding more dimension and texture.
Embellishment on the surface – You can add finishing touches by stitching delicate Colour Streams sequins into place with seed beads. Colour Streams has flower sequins, square and diamond forms, tiny 2mm wide and 3mm wide sequins in a vast colour assortment. These sequinsadd flickers of light to your embroidery. Many people collect up old & new buttons. Maybe you like to group together buttons of various shades, sizes and textures to create interest and other found items such as old gems or treasures. An array of hand-dyed and natural mother of pearl buttons is offered at Colour Streams. Mix in a few beads amongst them and it is an extra highlight in your collage.
Our fabric embroidery kits show off these collage techniques in a few different designs. This kit starts with a stiffener (such as felt) and hand-dyed Habatai silk, continues with hand-dyed lace, crinkle silk chiffon, braids, trims and embroidery and finishes with beading. It creates a very rich textural journey, making it look more time-consuming than what it actually is. Hand-dyed overdyed products which Colour Streams produce make creating that colour play much easier. As the fabrics and threads change colours it brings a tint and tonal deepness to your work.
