All About Embroidered Loops

Loops are extremely pervasive in stitching, knitting and crocheting. They can be used to stitch small details onto garments, or as ornamental details in themselves, attached to the edge of fabric for a stylish touch. They are also used in the lettering embroidered onto garments for some groups, particularly athletes participating in major league sports, where the lettering is used to spell out a player’s surname and number on the team.

A picot is a loop of thread which is made to serve either a decorative or a practical purpose. They are used along the edges of ornamental fabrics such as lace. They may also be used along the edges of ribbon and of other materials that have been knitted, crocheted or tatted. How large the embroidered loop is depends on the purpose that they are meant to fulfil, and the creative purpose of the person making it.

Stylish garments can be made using embroidered loop detail. For example, a garment such as a skirt can be given this intricate, hand-embroidered detail along its edges for an eye-catching touch. Jackets can also be given an effective and fashionable look by adding loop detailing to its edges. Loops can be the same color as the garment for a soft and feminine look, or in a contrasting color for a striking and high-fashion effect. A dress may be made with loops stitched into the back of the dress for a sexy and edgy look.

Some garments may also use an embroidered loop shape for decorative purposes. For example, it is very common for this kind of design to be used on the back pockets of a pair of jeans, to add interest and detail to the seat of the jeans. Black jeans may have a white loop on the back pocket, and blue jeans may have a dark blue loop to complement, or a contrasting color such as yellow or orange to stand out against the denim for a more striking effect.

Loop stitch is a good stitch to use for small and detailed embroidery. Many companies that offer garments customized with stitching will use stitching like this. They may offer garment patches made from embroidered loop stitch, such as sports team logos, emblems like leaves and flowers, emblems for associations, and the logos of educational institutions. They also use loop stitch to embroider directly onto garments, as it provides a high level of detailing that is ideal for intricate stitching such as lettering and details on logos and emblems.

It is also common to see garments using embroidered loop lettering. This lettering is most common on sports jerseys, particularly for basketball. Players’ names and position numbers are stitched onto their sports jerseys in this looping style of lettering, to give a stylized and striking look to the lettering. All professional players use this style of lettering to personalize their jerseys, so that they can be easily identified by spectators when they are in play on the field.
