What type of fabric is used to make Tea Towels?

I want to make my own tea towels, to embroider on, but have not been able to find the right weight/type of fabric in the fabric shops, in order to do so. Does anyone know what kind of fabric is actually used? (Homespun type.. plaids, stripes, checks, etc)

100% cotton. If you want to embroider tea towels, go to a craft store like Michaels or Crafts Direct. They have the towels there to purchase, you can even buy them in bulk. Good luck!
