Decorating 101: Using Color

Have you ever walked into your home and just felt like something was lacking? Sometimes things just look dull, flat, and even a little boring. People often make the mistake of decorating their home in white, beige, brown, and other bland, monotonous colors. For a room to have personality and interest, you need color! Whether it’s little splashes or big bold accents, color will change the way you look at your home.

A home should always show some personality. You want a décor that’s vibrant, one that will attract the eye. You won’t be able to spark much interest with lifeless colors such as beige and white. Although you don’t necessarily need colors like bright red and passionate purple, a few great colors can really liven the place up. Here are some great colors tips to help you transform your home from drab to dramatic.

Transform the Walls
If you’re looking to make a big transformation while adhering to a budget, painting the walls is a great way to go. Before you do anything at all, however, you first need to determine what colors will be used in the furnishings and accents. All your colors should either complement or contrast one another. If springtime hues are your thing, consider using bright greens, peaches, yellows, and blues. Hang a botanical print on that spring green wall to add a cheeriness to the room that is hard to ignore.

No matter what colors you choose, try painting only one or two walls, leaving the rest white. This gives the room some real dimension and depth. You might also paint the baseboards a contrasting color or a much deeper shade of the same color.

Floors Are for More Than Just Walking!
When looking at the complete picture, people often neglect to include their floors. Can wood floors, tile, or carpet be dressed up? Of course they can. Liven up those wood or tile floors by topping them with brightly colored accent rugs in strategic areas. Add rugs with patterns that reflect the rest of your décor. Go with whatever suits your decorating style, whether it’s florals, plaids, abstracts, or geometrics. You can use area rugs even if you only have carpeting. A rug would look great placed in front of the couch or in the center of a furniture grouping where you often entertain.

What About Furnishings?
Here’s where you can really start to have fun. Many people assume that you shouldn’t mix and match patterns. But if you have a floral sofa containing bright hues of green, yellow, and blue, don’t be afraid to add striped and plaid throw pillows containing those same colors. You’ll be amazed by the result, which is simply stunning. Add in some throws, tapestries, or anything else that will give you a big bold splash of color! If you have solid-colored furniture, then use large throw pillows or blankets with loud patterns. You might even hang a brightly colored quilt over the back of the sofa.

When you want to liven up a dull look, the key is color and pattern. Figure out what colors you love and use your imagination. All you need is some paint, a few area rugs, throw pillows, tapestries, and other accents.

The great thing about color is that you can add energy and personality to your home without spending too much money. For very little cost, you can completely transform the look and atmosphere of a room. Big splashes of color can really make an incredible difference. Go ahead and be daring, and you’ll ensure that you’ll never walk into a boring room in your home again.
