Custom Wedding Gown Design Tips For Brides
Have you shopped and shopped, and still can’t find the perfect wedding gown? A custom bridal gown might be the perfect solution for you. (This is not to say that you will be the one to sew the dress!) This is what you need to know to work with a seamstress to create the wedding gown of your dreams.
By the time they get to the point of ordering a custom bridal gown, most brides have tried on lots and lots of dresses, which is very helpful. That is because what you love in a picture might not look so great when you put it on your body. After you have experimented with a lot of silhouettes, you will see a pattern emerge of what styles consistenly appeal to you. Typically, a bride has tried on and ruled out dozens of dresses before she orders a custom gown. If you have not, go to a self service bridal salon where you can try on every conceivable shape without taking up an appointment.
Brides love that when they help create their own bridal gown it can be a combination of all of their favorite gown samples. It is highly helpful to the person who will make your gown if you come prepared with pictures of the dresses that appeal to you. A great seamstress knows how to pull all the pieces and parts together into one spectacular gown. It’s helpful if you can give her a vision of your overall wedding style. If you envision wearing crystal heart earrings for an ultra-romantic Valentine’s day wedding, she can help you design a very romantic dress. If you adore Audrey Hepburn, she can design a Sabrina inspired dress for your wedding.
Choosing the fabric you would like is one step in the design process. You will have many options for material. Certain materials are better for tailored shapes, and other types are more appropriate for flowy dresses. Choose a slubby silk shantung for autumn or a dotted Swiss for a springtime bride. The perfect material will feel great to touch and will also be appropriate for the gown construction and silhouette. The person making your gown should be able to guide you to an appropriate material for your dress. One of the best things about having a custom gown made is that you can choose a unique material if you like. Look at everything – Chantilly lace, beaded dupioni, silk devore – there are some incredible fabrics out there.
Try to be open minded as your gown is made, because you might have some “happy accidents” that unfold along the way. A neat thing about creating a custom wedding dress is that you can make changes as the process goes along. You could be stuck on a strapless bodice, and then learn that you look better with thin straps. Maybe you will come across a gorgeous accent to complete your beautiful dress. It could be a jeweled sash to pick up the sparkle of your crystal heart earrings, a set of vintage pearl buttons, or a stunning lace applique. The best results will come when you have solid ideas and are also open minded.
The feeling of wearing a wedding dress which was handmade for you is incomparable. The style will be unique, the fit will be impeccable, and all of the choices will be yours. Designing your own dress is the perfect way to ensure that you get your dream wedding gown.
